The iPad stays on the bedside table, permanently plugged in, because it no longer lasts an evening. A new battery fixes that for a long time.
An iPad isn't replaced every three years like a phone: many are six or eight years old and still work very well, except for the battery. Replacing it is the repair that extends the device's life the most.
Why it is trickier than on an iPhone
On an iPad you first have to lift the screen (bonded all round), then remove a battery glued over its whole surface, without bending it. A bent battery can catch fire: we work with dedicated tools, battery discharged, and reassemble with fresh adhesives before leaving the screen under press. Hence a one-day turnaround.
When to do it
- Battery life has dropped to a few hours.
- The iPad shuts down at 20 or 30%.
- Charging is very slow or the iPad gets hot while charging.
- The screen lifts on one side: the battery is swelling, to be dealt with immediately.
