PS5: the drive no longer takes the disc, or spits it out
A PS5 drive that makes a noise then returns the disc is almost never the disc's fault. And it isn't always the whole drive either.
The PS5's Blu-ray drive is a sealed mechanical unit, linked to the logic board by a ribbon cable and paired to the console by its electronics: you can't simply drop in a second-hand one. Three families of faults keep coming back.
The disc won't go in or comes back out
Most often it is the loading mechanism: dirty rollers, a tired spring, or a foreign object. A child's game card, a sticker peeled off a disc… We strip it down, clean it, replace the rollers if needed.
The disc spins but isn't recognised
That is the optical unit: the lens is dirty or the laser is fading. We start with a clean; if the laser is at the end of its life we replace the optical unit while keeping the drive's board, which avoids the pairing problem with the console.
The drive is dead
After a knock or a liquid, we replace the complete drive, transferring the original electronics board so the console recognises it. Prices per model (PS5, Slim, PS4) are on the prices page; the PS5 Pro and Digital have no built-in drive, so the external drive is quoted individually.
One simple tip: never force a disc, and don't use shop-bought drive “cleaners”, which damage the lens more than they clean it.
